Portland’s Marriage + Cancer meld seasick rhythms with disfigured, atonal instrumentation on their new 7″ single, BRO. Following hot on the heels of their self-titled full-length released earlier in 2018, BRO continues to explore the band’s unique take on the noise rock genre. Falling somewhere between Confusion is Sex-era Sonic Youth, Teenage Jesus and Amphetamine Reptile, the two tracks featured on BRO will appease fans of all things noisy, disorienting and gross. The eponymous track kicks things off with a nauseating, repetitive groove that is eventually overtaken by dissonant chords and gritty bass lines. The guitars gradually become more unhinged and layered as the song progresses, eventually ending in a tinnitus-inducing climax of jagged riffs and screeching guitar noise. Much like “BRO”, the b-side “TRIGGERED” also latches onto a particularly off-kilter, sinister groove that subtly shifts into more obtuse shapes. The guitars soon unleash an assault of pummeling, angular chords intertwined with bending, decrepit leads as the drumming becomes more fierce. By the end of this short release, listeners should be properly discombobulated and eager to dive right back end.

It’s the archetypical PNW day and the grey, damp haze is suffocating my existence. Portland’s Marriage + Cancer get where I’m coming from – their new s/t set to release next year is the perfect dissonant and grimy soundtrack to these dark days. Today I’m going to share a small piece of this excellent LP with you in the form of “God is Tan,” so hit play below and release some of the chill in your bones.

Once I moved out to Portland I had the chance to see a number of local bands do their thing and within a couple of months of living here Marriage and Cancer released their debut full length, and I have to say, I’ve never heard a band quite like them. Easily the loudest damn band in town and with a jangly, weird, heavy, and strange sound all their own they found a way to make the wild sounds of bands like Drive Like Jehu sound downright creepy, discomforting, and melancholy. It’s quite a feat and as odd as that may sound it still rocks my socks off.

The sheer brutality of Marriage + Cancer.
If Jesus Lizard and In Utero-era Nirvana had a baby it would sound an awful lot like Marriage + Cancer. This quartet from Portland makes a bunch of glorious, crashing, chaotic yet precise, noise on their self-titled debut that comes out near the beginning of next month.

Most bands that attempt this type of sound tend to be unable to bolt the kind of chainlink melodies to the rumbling avalanches of sound that makes the sound unique and not simply derivative. I mean, when I open something with a "RIYL: Jesus Lizard, Nirvana," that's a pretty fucking tall order, right? But Marriage + Cancer earns the comparison.

Marriage + Cancer sounds off from the jagged recesses of domestic landscape, their self-titled debut letting out a bellicose & harrowing howl into today’s political & social voids. Rising from the ashes of K Records band Nucular Aminals, vocalist/guitarist Robert Comitz reformed the band under its new moniker, shedding the former’s organ grinding & jaunty goth riffs for a heavier approach ranging from the thumping bass of album opener “Command + Comply” to the early-Sonic Youth-esque riffing of “Gound” to the rhythmic expanse of “View From A Cross.”
